The VacancyInis Environmental Consultants Ltd. (INIS) are seeking to recruit a full time Ecological Clerk of Work (ECoW) to work within our growing Ecology team and meet our continued growth and demand for our services. We are hiring in either our Ennis, Cork and Dublin offices.Inis currently has a varied portfolio of conservation, engineering and infrastructural projects that require on-site management to assist in the delivery of biodiversity protection and enhancement during construction. The successful candidate will gain experience in pre-commencement ecological surveys and oversee ecological and environmental control on construction sites under the guidance of a Chartered Environmentalist.Inis, based in County Clare and formed in 2001, is a specialist ecological services and environmental consultancy. Inis offers a multidisciplinary approach to ecological assessments and surveys. Employing 40 people based at its offices in Ennis, Cork and Dublin, its services cover the terrestrial, marine, and freshwater environments. We work on projects throughout the 32 counties and are currently providing ECoW services in 8 counties.Inis is a wholly owned subsidiary of the RSK Group of companies. Joining our team will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity to work with multi-disciplinary teams across Ireland.Key Responsibilities:
  • Advise on protecting valued biodiversity features on construction sites.
  • Provide practical, site-specific, and proportionate assistance on how their clients can achieve compliance with environmental legislation.
  • Review relevant documents, including AA/NIS, EcIA, CEMP and species and habitat management plans.
  • Consult with local planning authorities, local Biodiversity officers, National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS), and Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI).
  • Pre-construction and construction phase checks for protected species.
  • Provision of an ecological watching brief during, for example, vegetation clearance or building renovation or demolition, habitat translocation work, habitat creation, habitat enhancement, and habitat management work; and
  • Daily record keeping, signing off construction documents and production of reports (as required) for auditing purposes.
Person Specification:The ideal candidate will show strong enthusiasm to manage ecological or environmental risks on construction projects, advising and supporting clients and construction contractors on environmental regulations and planning conditions associated with their projects to ensure smooth and cost-efficient project delivery.In addition, the following are essential:
  • A third-level qualification in environmental science, zoology, ecology, or a similar discipline.
  • A minimum of 3 years of work experience on a broad range of ecological projects, ideally involving the delivery of practical conservation advice or management.
  • An awareness and understanding of Irish and EU environmental protection and wildlife legislation and planning guidelines.
  • Excellent communication skills, including face-to-face discussion with clients and their contractors as well as verbal and written communication.
  • Full driving licence and willingness to travel to sites.
The following skills and experience are also desirable:
  • Proven experience as an ECoW or in a similar field-based ecological role.
  • Knowledge of construction management, civil engineering and project management.
  • Membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or the Association of Environmental Clerks of Work (AEnvCoW), or the ability to attain membership within three months of appointment
  • Excellent IT skills
