The role focuses on practical site supervision, inspection, and record keeping - ensuring that works delivered by the Design and Build Contractor meet the standards, specifications, and requirements set out in the contract and project scope.This is a hands-on site role, ideal for an experienced site engineer or site manager with a strong understanding of civil construction and an interest in developing quality and assurance expertise.
Full training and ongoing mentoring in NEC4 processes, quality control, and inspection procedures will be provided.As a Civil Works Inspector at Arup, you will:Assist the NEC4 Project Supervisor with day-to-day site inspections, quality checks, and compliance verification of civil works.Monitor workmanship, materials, and testing activities against approved drawings, specifications, and inspection/test plans (ITPs).Maintain detailed and accurate site records, photographs, and inspection reports.Identify and record defects or non-conformances and support their closeout through the project team.Check that Contractor's temporary works, traffic management, and safety arrangements comply with approved method statements and permits.Support environmental, safety, and quality audits on site.Liaise with the Contractor's engineers, foremen, and quality representatives to ensure clear communication and resolution of issues.Assist in the preparation and review of inspection forms, test records, and red-line markups for as-built documentation.Participate in progress meetings and provide factual updates on workmanship and testing.Support the NEC4 Project Supervisor with reporting, assurance dashboards, and records for handover.Promote continuous improvement and good practice in construction quality and safety managementDoes this role inspire you?We're looking for someone who is passionateEssential:Minimum 5 years' experience in civil engineering site works - ideally as a Site Engineer, Site Manager, or General Foreman.Practical experience in one or more of the following:Roadworks, drainage, or utilities construction;Earthworks, reinforced concrete, or structural works;Streetscape / urban infrastructure delivery.Understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and testing requirements.Experience working under a main contractor or supervision team on live infrastructure projects.Strong attention to detail, proactive approach to problem-solving, and ability to work independently on site.We also value:Previous experience working under NEC3 or NEC4 contracts.Experience with inspection and test planning, quality records, or site assurance documentation.Understanding of environmental and safety requirements for road or utility works.SkillsGood communication and report-writing skills.Ability to interpret drawings and identify issues on site.Competent with Microsoft Office and basic digital site record systems.Team-oriented, with the confidence to engage with contractors and consultants on technical matters.Strong awareness of site safety and quality standards.Organised, disciplined, and capable of maintaining accurate inspection records.QualificationsPreferred: Diploma or degree in civil engineering, construction management, or related discipline.Training: Safe Pass (required).
