- Railway Systems experience – signalling, electrification, telecommunications and related systems including one specialist area
- Implement multidisciplinary design information exchange workflow for infrastructure projects.
- Manage small and medium work packages.
- Responsible for managing and technical oversight of a small team of supporting engineers and technicians.
- Prepare technical designs, drawings, reports, correspondence and other outputs in accordance with approved design standards and procedures in line with the project delivery programme.
- Ensure that relevant legislation, regulations, policies, strategies and technical guidance is interpreted, followed and communicated across the team with limited guidance from more senior members of staff.
- Implement the appropriate QA procedures for all deliverables and ensure compliance with H&S requirements.
- Communicate effectively and in a team environment with a broad cross-section of individuals. This would typically include, but is not limited to; permanent way and civil works colleagues and project managers, other internal design disciplines, clients and contractors.
- Carrying out rail systems engineering design for various railway environments (e.g. light rail, commuter rail, freight rail, metro) covering predominantly electrification, traction power, SCADA and telecommunications systems.
- Writing or reviewing rail systems specifications and standards for various railway environments as required
- Conducting and implementing engineering controls, requirements management, systems engineering, risk assessments and HAZOP analysis
- Working on projects from concept design stage, optioneering stage, preliminary stage, detailed design stage right through to the construction stage.
- Attending meetings on site and monitoring the construction while on site, answering any technical queries that may arise from time to time.
- Attending meetings with other members of the design team and Client to develop the designs of a project.
- Review other design team and subcontractor drawings and coordinate them with design drawings.
- Review any specialist design drawings submitted by contractors.
- Managing a team of junior engineers, engineers, technicians, and sub consultants as required within the rail group structure and liaising with more senior members of the rail engineering team. Review other members workload and designs, specifications, and standards that they complete.
- Participate in the review of various projects within the team and share knowledge and skills.
- Participate in in-house and external continuing professional development to develop new technical and communication skills.
- Manage own workload and others.
- Provide mentoring to junior engineers.
- Take responsibility for the designs that are carried out and develop appropriate communication skills to articulate various solutions to both internal members of the engineering team and external bodies such as contractors, design team members, public bodies and clients.
- Bachelors Degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or equivalent.
- Minimum of 5 to 10 years post graduate experience, preferably in an operational environment.
- Chartered or working towards chartered professional status.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team, but also self-reliant and ability to work independently as required
- Electrical railway systems design and operating principles with exposure to other systems disciplines in a railway engineering environment
- Installation and maintenance.
- Troubleshooting, fault finding or related practical experience.
- Document control.
- Technical Documentation Preparation.
- Drafting of standards.
- Rail systems design and contract management.
- Testing and Commissioning experience.
