Reports to: QC Senior ManagerAbout the RoleWe are seeking a QC Microbiology Specialist to join a growing pharmaceutical company based in Cork. This is a desk-based role (non-laboratory) providing critical microbiology expertise within a quality-focused manufacturing environment. The successful candidate will serve as the point of contact for all microbiological matters on site, playing a key role in environmental monitoring, water sampling programs, risk assessments, and deviation investigations.Though the title is Microbiology Specialist, a background in both Microbiology and Chemistry is beneficial due to cross-functional support within the QC team.Key Responsibilities
- Act as the site Subject Matter Expert (SME) for all microbiology-related activities
- Oversee and support Environmental Monitoring (EM) and Water Sampling programs
- Provide training to operators in aseptic sampling techniques
- Interface with external labs for microbiological testing; review and interpret results
- Lead or support investigations into microbiology Out of Specification (OOS) or deviation events
- Participate in quality risk assessments and support audit readiness activities
- Liaise closely with QA and Chemistry teams to ensure quality standards are met
- Support global initiatives related to QC Microbiology and maintain alignment with internal standards
- Bachelor's degree in microbiology, Biology, or a related scientific discipline is required. A master's degree is advantageous
- Significant experience in Environmental Monitoring, Water Sampling, and microbial risk assessment
- Experience managing microbiology investigations and deviations
- Strong understanding of cGMP requirements in a pharmaceutical or biotech setting
- Excellent communication and documentation skills
- Previous experience working in a desk-based, non-lab QC role is a plus
