The main duties and responsibilities of the Mechanical Estimator are outlined as follows: * Estimate Preparation:
  • Develop detailed and accurate estimates for mechanical engineering works based on outline drawings and specifications.
  • Ensure that estimates reflect a realistic level of risk and adhere to company guidelines and industry standards.
  • Design Development Participation:
  • Engage in the design development process to evaluate buildability, material selection, innovative solutions, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Provide early-stage pricing information during tendering to assist in optioneering and budgeting, ensuring that the most cost-effective solutions are proposed.
  • Risk and Governance Compliance:
  • Ensure all procedures, including risk management and governance processes, are followed, thoroughly documented, and properly authorised.
  • Tender Preparation:
  • Contribute to the development of Tender Preparation and Tender Construction programmes.
  • Collaborate with other functions to prepare a detailed staff schedule for tenders, using insights from successful projects.
  • Procurement Planning:
  • Work with central and regional buyers to prepare a procurement plan, identifying suppliers and subcontractors, and negotiating terms, conditions, and discount levels.
  • Prepare and send out enquiries to obtain competitive quotations for mechanical engineering resources, particularly materials and subcontractors.
  • Technical and Industry Awareness:
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of technical developments and new methods within the mechanical engineering industry.
  • Apply this knowledge to enhance the accuracy and competitiveness of estimates.
  • Financial Modelling:
  • Develop financial models for framework submissions, including setting appropriate staff rates and ensuring these are aligned with project budgets.
  • Cost Coding and Feedback:
  • Utilise the standardised cost coding system to enable meaningful feedback and future cost capture, ensuring consistency and accuracy in financial tracking.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:The main knowledge, skills and experience required of the Mechanical Estimator are outlined as follows: * Experience:
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical estimating, preferably within the water, wastewater, or construction sectors.
  • Proven track record in preparing detailed and accurate mechanical estimates.
  • Skills:
  • Strong analytical and numerical skills with attention to detail.
  • Excellent knowledge of mechanical engineering principles and construction methods.
  • Proficiency in cost estimating software and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines
