- Reviewing the current state of knowledge of Ireland’s insects, Identifying key knowledge gaps. This will include identifying those groups that require checklists or additional surveys; as well as those for which national databases could be developed, and those for which Red Lists could be developed or updated.
- Developing a prioritised workplan to address these knowledge gaps within the current National Biodiversity Data Centre Strategic Plan (2024-2028).
- Assisting with the backlog of insect validation to be processed from Biodiversity Maps.
- Delivering insect workshops within the Centre’s annual workshop programme.
- Developing online and hard copy training resources for under-recorded insect groups.
- Assisting with the organisation and delivery of insect-focussed field meetings.
- Establishing specialist knowledge exchange groups to enable volunteers to upskill on taxonomic identification of key under-recorded insect groups e.g., wasps, ants.
- Fieldwork to survey under-recorded insect groups.
- Collaborate with the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History on insect collections digitisation and depositing voucher specimens.
- Contribute to the general work of the National Biodiversity Data Centre as requested.
- Undertake other duties as may be assigned from time to time.
- Ensuring health and safety is actively managed and a positive health and safety culture is promoted.
- A recognised degree, Level 8 in the National Framework of Qualifications, in a subject relevant to biodiversity e.g. environmental science, environmental management, ecology, earth/natural sciences, zoology, botany, natural resources management,
- Hold a relevant post graduate qualification Level 9 in the National Framework of Qualifications in a subject relevant to biodiversity e.g. environmental science, ecology, earth/natural sciences, zoology, botany or natural resources management.
- Have specialist knowledge on insect nomenclature and taxonomy.
- Have experience of developing digital taxonomic databases and understanding curatorial standards for insect collections.
- Possess broadly based taxonomic identification and field survey skills.
- Have experience of providing training courses or resources to build capacity on species identification.
- Have full rights to work in Ireland.
- Competitive Starting Salary: €40,000
